The AIM QUALIFICATIONS Level 3 Award in Canine Behaviour and Communication is part of the Canine Studies certificate has been developed to provide learners with the knowledge and skills to pursue a career working in the canine care and welfare sector.

It can be studied as a stand alone Award or as part of the canine Studies certificate.

This qualification can be used flexibly to meet learner needs. Depending on the context of the learning and the needs of each

 individual learner, the qualification can:
Prepare individuals to progress to a qualification in the same subject area but at a higher level or requiring more specific knowledge,   skills and understanding;

• prepare learners for employment;

• support a role in the workplace;

• encourage engagement in learning.

 This qualification has been designed to enable learners to understand Canine Care and Welfare.

2. Understand the natural behaviour of wild canids and how this influences domesticated dog behaviour.

2.1. Summarise the natural behaviour of wild canids.

2.2. Analyse how the behaviour of wild canids influences the behaviour of domestic dogs.

2.3. Evaluate how knowledge of the behaviour of wild canids is useful when working with domesticated dog

3. Understand the natural ethology and communication of the dog.

3.1. Describe dog behaviour in a variety of situations.

3.2. Describe ways that dogs communicate with each other.

3.3. Explain how dogs communicate with other species including humans.

3.4. Outline barriers to dog-human communication.

4. Understand dogs’ emotions and their implications.

4.1. Explain the dogs’ emotional repertoire.

4.2 Outline the causes of stress in dogs.

4.3 Describe the impacts of stress in dogs.
